Perfect Access Panels
cut out and trimming techniques
for composite and balsa

The right tools make it easy and neat.

  • Enhance the outline of the panel with tape if necessary.

  • Use a straight edge to guide a fresh #11 X-acto blade in multiple light strokes to cut through the thin fiberglass outer skin.

  • Start the saw cut with a standard #235 X-acto saw blade.

  • Finish the saw cutting with a #235 blade but with its handle removed. Note: To remove the handle, grip the sawblade in a vise and peel the handle off, then grind flat the dimples that are on the blade's back edge.

  • Use metal shears to cut the Perma-Grit FXT-103 flex strip (fine) into convenient size strips. Flaten the strips in a vise and gring off any burrs. Size's shown are 2" x 4" and 1-1/4" x 3".

  • You will find that the FXT-103 strips are absolutely the best tools for smoothing the edges of the saw cut pieces.

  • Apply thin C.A. (ZAP) to the edges of the balsa then use the FXT-103 again to sand them smooth.

  • You should now have some great fitting panels that were very easy to accomplish. To secure the panel in place, use BVM panel screws and our counter sink tool.
