Bandit
Center of
Gravity
and other factors affect the
landing
A nose heavy model is hard to fly and can be even harder
to land, the nose falls through and the porpoising begins. The official
published C.G.'s for the Bandit (composite) is 8-1/2" aft of the L.E. measured
at the wing to fuse joint and 8-1/4" for the balsa Bandit. The measurement is
accomplished with zero fuel and the gear down. These C.G. locations are a good
safe place to start.
Many pilots prefer to ease the C.G. aft 1/8"
to 1/4" at a time until they are pleased with the results. Be aware that the
landing C.G. will vary some depending on the fuel remaining, so if you have a
little extra in the tanks be prepared to hold more up elevator for the touch
down. Of course it is also necessary to have the full measure of up travel as
the plans call for i.e. 1-1/8".
Should you have high or gusty wind conditions, reduce the
landing flap angle about 10° prior to take off. A complete description of
the correct first flight profile and landing pattern is provided in the Bandit
instruction manual.
